Located north of downtown Amherst, Mass., the University of Massachusetts at Amherst was founded in 1863 as a state agricultural college. Part of the Five College Consortium, UMass Amherst is the largest public university in New England. With about 1,300 faculty and more than 29,000 students, the school is the flagship in the University of Massachusetts system.
