Officially the University of Vermont and State Agricultural College, UVM is a large, public research university. Since 1862 UVM has been the state of Vermont’s sole land-grant university. Located in Burlington, the school has about 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The University of Vermont is one of the eight original ‘Public Ivies,’ publicly funded universities considered to be providing a quality of education comparable to the Ivy League. Founded in 1791, UVM is among the oldest universities in the United States and is the fifth institution of higher education established in New England.
