One of the Five College Consortium and located in Amherst, Mass., Hampshire College is well known for its alternative curriculum and use of written evaluations instead of grades and GPAs. It was founded in 1965 as an experiment in alternative education. The school claims to be first in the U.S. in percentage of its graduates who go on to get doctorate degrees in history.
